Unfortunately relapses can occur and, statistically, are pretty high. The key (and believe me it has taken years of trial and error to get to this point) is to allow it. Don’t resist it. The more you resist and fight it, the worse it becomes, so it can spiral out of control. Whether it is a depressive relapse or manic relapse, my own experience has been to just rest. For me a relapse can last as long as a week and I am not belittling it, as it is truly horrifying. The black hole envelops me and there is no light. I start to suffer from panic attacks and convince myself that I will never recover and be ‘’normal’’ again.
Examples of relapse triggers can be found later in the book (under T) however on the occasions that it has happened it has usually been due to a shock change in routine.
