I lost my licence through drink driving when I was in my second year at University. I was driving to watch friends play hockey and (very unlike me) had only a couple of drinks in the bar afterwards. Unfortunately my friend’s backside sticking out of the window attracted some police attention as did me driving with fog lights on (new car and not foggy!). So I was pulled over and marginally failed a breath test. The policeman was delightful and actually very sympathetic considering the appalling antics of drunk students he must have been used to. So after a few hours in the cell (great for a would be lawyer) I was released and called to court a few months later. I received a year’s ban. The worse part of all this is that the night before the court case I went out with a friend and got extremely drunk on cocktails, and so many more years in that irresponsible vein were to follow…
